Scott Peters (politician)

Scott Peters is a politician who represented San Diego City Council District 1 for two terms. Elected to office in 2000 and then reelected in 2004, Peters was selected as the first San Diego City Council President in its history in 2005.[1] Having reached the end of his term limit, Peters ran for City Attorney, placing third in the June 3rd 2008 primary.[2] Peters was succeeded in the District 1 Council seat by Sherri Lightner.[3] Prior to his election Peters worked as an attorney and later served as deputy county counsel.

In private practice, he gained notoriety in a lawsuit against a local shipbuilder.[4] He was involved in the push to remove alcohol from the city's beaches, as well as smoking from public beaches and parks.[5][6]

On October 17, 2011, Scott Peters announced that he would seek election to represent the citizens of California's redrawn 52nd Congressional district.[7] He stated that national representatives should "put personal politics aside and put the people they represent first," and considers himself to be a "common sense Democrat."[7] He will challenge a Republican incumbent for the seat.[7]

Peters lists his priorities as job creation, development of an energy policy that reduces dependence on foreign oil, keeping commitments to veterans and their families, and ending irresponsible spending patterns.[7]
